A PNR is an abbreviated form of Passenger Name Record (PNR) in the Indian Railways. It is basically a record of the itinerary for a passenger or group of passengers who are traveling together in the database of a Computer Reservation System. It is a unique 10-digit PNR is assigned to each railway reservation whether it is done online or by visiting a railway reservation counter. PNR number is located on the top left corner of a railway ticket.
There are many ways of getting the PNR status including checking PNR status online on IRCTC site, by telephone and by mobile using SMS. . The passenger can open the website of IRCTC which is irctc.co.in and go to the PNR inquiry page. There will be a box where the passenger needs to enter his ten digit unique PNR number and at just a single click the information about the current status of the ticket will be available to the passenger. At a single click the user can check the status of their ticket. Checking the current status of an RAC or Waiting List ticket is extremely helpful as there is continuous updating on tickets as people with confirmed tickets cancel their ticket which makes those with unconfirmed tickets have a chance of getting their tickets confirmed. Thus PNR number becomes important in knowing about the status of the ticket. This facility of checking the PNR on the website is a 24*7 service.
Another way to check PNR status is to send an SMS TRAIN to 5676747. User will get a reply which will be similar to “Welcome to rail zone. Reply with PNR - PNR Status, TL - Train List, TA - Ticket Availability, e.g. SMS PNR to get PNR status.” To check the IRCTC PNR status, user has to send a message PNR <PNR NUMBER> to 5676747 and he will get the current status update about his PNR number. User can also call 139 from your BSNL, MTNL, Airtel, Vodafone etc landlines. Most telecom service providers support 139.
