Let us first discuss what exactly PNR number is and what is its use. PNR number stands for passenger name record. It is a unique ten digit number which provides all the details and current status of a ticket. It is given on every ticket whether it is booked at the railway counter, through authorized travel agents or booked online. Be it an e-ticket, i-ticket or booked at the counter, it is there in all kinds of tickets. Using a PNR number a passenger can get information regarding status of ticket, seat numbers and coach number. Even when a ticket is not confirmed a PNR number will give details about whether a ticket is RAC or waiting and then provide current status details about the ticket.
The PNR number serves a very important purpose for those who haven’t got their tickets confirmed. At a single click they can check the status of their ticket as there is continuous updating on tickets. People with conformed tickets cancel their ticket which makes those with unconfirmed tickets have a chance of getting their tickets confirmed. Thus PNR number becomes important in knowing about the status of the ticket. This facility of checking the PNR on the website or at the call center is a 24*7 service.
One of the easiest methods to get current status about PNR number is at the official site of the Indian Railways irctc.co.in. When a user clicks on PNR inquiry, he is directed to www.indianrail.gov.in. A passenger just needs to enter the ten digit PNR number and within a few seconds the status of the specified PNR number will be there on the screen.
The Railways have also started a call center with the number 139. Users can also check their status by calling or sending an SMS to 139 from their mobile phone or landlines phone. A passenger needs to call 139 and follow the directions to get status updates on his PNR number. The passenger can also send an SMS to 139 by prefixing the ten digit PNR number with “PRN” and he will get the status updates through an SMS.
