PNR stand for passenger name record. It is a unique ten digit number which serves various purposes while IRCTC is the Indian railway catering and Tourism Corporation which is responsible for handling online ticket reservations, catering and tourism for the railways. IRCTC’s PNR number can give information about the train name, train number, boarding station, destination station, and date of journey, ticket status like coach and seat number and class of travel. When booking tickets for travel through the railways IRCTC gives a ten digit PNR number on all tickets. Whether the ticket is confirmed or RAC or waiting or whether it is booked through the railway counter or is an e-ticket or i-ticket; all tickets will have a mandatory PNR number.
A person with an RAC or waiting ticket can know about the current status of his ticket by quoting his PNR number. The passenger can open the website of IRCTC and go to the PNR inquiry page. There will be a box where the passenger needs to enter his ten digit unique PNR number and at just a single click the information about the current status of the ticket will be available to the passenger. At a single click the user can check the status of their ticket as there is continuous updating on tickets as people with confirmed tickets cancel their ticket which makes those with unconfirmed tickets have a chance of getting their tickets confirmed. Thus PNR number becomes important in knowing about the status of the ticket. This facility of checking the PNR on the website is a 24*7 service.
Railways have also started giving this information through phones. A passenger can also check his status by calling or sending an SMS to 139 from his mobile phone or landlines phone. A passenger needs to call 139 and follow the directions to get status updates on his PNR number. The passenger can also send an SMS to 139 by prefixing the ten digit PNR number with “PNR” and he will get the status updates through an SMS.
