Northern Railway is among the 17 zone of the Indian railways. It has its head office at New Delhi Railway Station, in the capital city of New Delhi. It has a route of 6807 Kilometers, the biggest network in India. It spreads across the states of Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, the state of Punjab and the union territories of Chandigarh and Delhi. The first passenger line in North India that opened up from Allahabad and Kanpur is a part of the Northern Railway. The first zone of Indian railways introduced the computerized passenger reservation system or online booking. It provides the facility of unreserved ticketing system for unreserved rail passengers who can purchase these unreserved tickets three days prior to current booking. Earlier, it consisted of eight divisional zones running across Allahabad, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Delhi, Ferozpur, Moradabad, Ambala and Lucknow, sweeping a large chuck of the northern India. After re-organization of its structure, Northern Railway constitutes five major divisional zones- Delhi, Moradabad, Ambala, Ferozpur and Lucknow.

Some of the notable trains that connect Delhi with other cities are Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, Mahaparinirvana Express and Palace on wheels which fall under the luxury train category. Other passenger trains are Himsagar Express, New Delhi-Jabalpur Express, Kashi Vishwanath Express, Prayagraj Express and Bareilly-New Delhi Intercity Express. Northen Railway brought in the first diesel and electric locomotive simulators at Kanpur and Tughlakabad locomotive shed to ascent the skills of the workers and drivers by training them for super fast trains operation. The diesel shed at Tughlakabad was the first to get ISO-14000. The Northern Railway looks after passengers’ safety through modern signaling. The Route Relay Interlocked System solved the problem of fog faced by the north Indian trains during winters. It is equipped with 40 RRIs out of which the Main RRI at Delhi is the largest in the world. Northern Railway has been involved in using modern and innovative technologies for the efficiency of its trains and safety of the passengers on-board. It operates many workshops in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab. Some of the workshops are workshops on bridge, engineering, carriage and wagon, signal and telecom and locomotive workshops. Through its website, the Northern Railway offers to passengers, utilitarian information about PNR status, seat availability, train schedule and passenger information.
