The Indian Railways is divided into zones and this train goes through four of them- the Northern Railways, the Southern Railways, Central Railways, and the South Central Railways.

It also covers nine of the states starting from Tamil Nadu, moving into Kerala, and then entering into Maharastra. From hereon, this train follows its route to enter Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and finally stopping at Jammu and Kashmir. It has 71 halt stations throughout the nine states and including a Slip Route, running between Erode and Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu. The halt stations may go upto 77 in the near future.
The schedule of the train follows a specific timetable. The Himsagar Express runs on a strict schedule once every week starting every Friday from Kanyakumari and reaching the Jammu Tawi station on Mondays. Although, not a super fast train, but it offers features that overlook its speed.
