One of the most popular Indian Railway is the ‘toy train’, which connects Siliguri in West Bengal with Darjeeling. For its peculiar toy like looks, the train has been given this name. For its looks and elegance, UNESCO has also listed it as a world heritage site in the year 1999. This route was laid between the year 1879 and 1881. It covers a total distance of 85 Kilometres during its entire journey in the Himalayan hilly terrain, at an altitude of 100m at Siliguri and 2,200 at Darjeeling. This popular train is still fetched by a steam engine giving a site of the old world as it passes you hooting. On its root, Darjeeling toy train covers various destination points such as New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri junction, Sukna, Tindharia, Gayabari, Tung, Sonada, Batasia and Darjeeling as its final destination. During the journey, the train takes you through beautiful locales amidst the great Himalayas, many breathtaking views and amazing loops on which the train runs. Darjeeling toy train starts operating with three pairs in a single day. The coach composition of these trains is varying such as a class coaches or the types of engines used to pull it. The trains also have different routes. The first train travels from New Jalpaiguri until Darjeeling, then back. The second train starts from New Jalpaiguri again and travels until Kurseong, then comes back. The third train starts from Kurseong, goes until Darjeeling, and then comes back.

On public demand, Darjeeling toy train also runs between SIliguri and Tindharia on weekends and national holidays. These are specially run trains for an exciting jungle safari in the Mahayana wildlife sanctuary. The train is comprised of three coaches of a class with a steam engine of B class. It travels from Darjeeling to till Gum and then return to Darjeeling, stopping at Gum museum and Batasia loop during this return journey. The tickets for the train can be booked on the Railway counters or through the Indian Railways website.
